Scott Brace Earns Euro Win
Everton Ladies star nets twice in vital England victory.
Jill Scott hit a brace to put England on their way to a 4-0 win over Slovenia - and one step closer to the 2013 Women's European Championship Finals.
The Everton Ladies midfielder scored both goals in the first half of the contest in Velenje, netting the opener from close range after the hosts failed to clear a corner.
Her second strike came just before the interval. Eniola Aluko provided a perfect pass into space, giving Scott plenty of time to deliver a composed finish.
The result was effectively sealed on 54 minutes when Karen Carney eluded the Slovenian defence and raced towards goal to score England's third.
Everton Ladies' Player of the Year Rachel Brown kept goal throughout the game, while Blues skipper Fara Williams played for 70 minutes.
Her replacement and namesake – Rachel Williams – notched the fourth goal five minutes from time, heading home Aluko's corner.
Toni Duggan, handed her debut call-up to the senior squad, was unable to pick up her first cap, but the 20-year old will certainly have learnt from the experience.
England sit second in Group Six, but had already gained ground on leaders Holland by defeating the Oranje 1-0 on Saturday in Salford.
Successive victories mean the gap is down to just two points and England must now win their final group game against rock-bottom Croatia in September to ensure qualification. Holland, in turn, have already played all of their fixtures.
A draw or a defeat would leave the Lionesses as runners-up, with play-offs then determining which nations head to Sweden next summer.
